The Composer Stephen Sondheim, notoriously
protective of his stage play, He had long prevented any adaptation of this
musical. Sondheim finally relented when seeing and was pleased with Tim Burton's vision for
the film, Sondheim maintained power of veto when casting the lead
roles. Both Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter had to personally audition
for Sondheim, who nearly rejected Depp, considering his vocals "too rock
oriented." One wonders if either of his two leads had be
rejected would Burton still of made the film.
